Payson Farmers Market: The Fresh Heart of the High Country
Every Saturday morning throughout the summer, the Sawmill Crossing Plaza transforms into a vibrant celebration of local life known as the Payson Farmers Market. Established in 2009 by John and Lorian Roethlein, this “Locavore” style market ensures that nearly all food products travel less than 100 miles from the farm to your basket.
Whether you’re a local resident stocking up for the week or a visitor from the Valley looking to escape the heat, the market offers a refreshing mountain-town atmosphere filled with the scent of roasted chilies and fresh sourdough.
The Experience: Music, Community & Vibes
More than just a shopping destination, the market is a community gathering place where neighbors catch up and visitors are welcomed into the rhythm of Payson life.
- Live Entertainment: Every week features live music from local artists—often a weathered cowboy with a guitar—whose songs stitch the market together.
- Family & Pet Friendly: The market is a fun outing for all ages, and well-mannered dogs are frequently seen greeting vendors alongside their owners.
- Local Artistry: Beyond food, the market showcases Rim Country artists, featuring handmade jewelry, pottery, and small-batch body products like lavender lip balms and herb-infused tallow butters.
Fresh From the Source
With over 55 stalls, the variety of Arizona-grown and produced goods is impressive, ranging from high-altitude harvest to treasures from the coast.
- Organic Produce: Discover a seasonal bounty of Arizona organically grown vegetables, heirloom tomatoes, gourmet mushrooms, and sweet local honey.
- Meats & Seafood: Shop for free-range beef, local pork, and even flash-frozen Alaskan seafood—a unique treat in the middle of the desert.
- Artisan Bakery: From crusty sourdough and fresh pastries to “take n bake” meals, the bakery stalls are a morning highlight.
- Specialty Goods: Look for unique finds like prickly pear tea, green chile sauces, aged cheeses, and creamy yogurts.
Nutrition & Support Programs
The Payson Farmers Market is dedicated to making fresh food accessible to everyone in our community.
- Benefit Programs: The market proudly accepts SNAP/EBT, WIC, and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program coupons.
- Double Up Food Bucks: Through the USDA-sponsored “Double Up Food Bucks” program, SNAP participants can stretch their food dollars even further for fresh produce.
