Horton Creek Trail: A Lush Oasis in Rim Country
Experience one of the most beloved trails in the Tonto National Forest. Located just a short 20-minute drive northeast of Payson, Horton Creek Trail offers a refreshing escape into a world of towering Ponderosa pines, mossy rocks, and the soothing sound of flowing water.
Whether you’re looking for a vigorous workout or a serene spot to reconnect with nature, this trail delivers the quintessential Arizona high-country experience.
The Experience
The trail follows a perennial creek, leading you through a dense forest canopy that provides welcome shade. The highlight of the journey is the Horton Spring, where crystal-clear water gushes directly from the base of the Mogollon Rim. Along the way, you’ll encounter small waterfalls and several idyllic spots perfect for a trailside picnic or a moment of reflection.

- Distance: 6.4 to 8.9 miles round-trip (depending on your turnaround point).
- Elevation Gain: ~1,000+ feet (Starting at 5,360 ft).
- Time: Allow 3.5 to 4.5 hours for the full experience.
- Best Seasons: Spring (for peak water flow) and Fall (for vibrant leaf-peeping).
Pro-Tips for Your Adventure
- Stay Navigated: While we love our “5G rustic charm” at the cabin, cell service is non-existent on this trail. Be sure to download your maps before leaving Payson.
- Hydration is Key: Even with the creek nearby, carry at least 2–3 liters of water per person.
- Parking: The trailhead is located near the Upper Tonto Creek Campground. It’s a popular spot, so arriving early on weekends is highly recommended.
- Leave No Trace: This is a primitive area with no trash facilities. Please pack out everything you pack in to keep the Rim beautiful.
