Ellison Creek Waterfall: Payson’s Premier Natural Oasis
Discover one of the most iconic gems of the Tonto National Forest. Often referred to locally as “Water Wheel Falls,” Ellison Creek Waterfall is a breathtaking collection of cascades and deep granite swimming holes located just a short drive from downtown Payson.
Whether you are looking to plunge into refreshing mountain waters or simply lounge on sun-warmed boulders, this destination offers the ultimate Rim Country summer experience.
The Experience
The trail winds alongside the East Verde River, requiring a bit of adventurous “rock hopping” and river crossing to reach the main event: a stunning waterfall that spills into a wide, emerald pool. Along the way, you’ll find smaller cascades and unique geological formations carved by centuries of flowing water.
Adventure Essentials
- Difficulty: Moderate (involves rocky scrambles and crossing the river over boulders/logs).
- Distance: Approximately 1.6 to 2 miles round-trip from the Water Wheel area.
- Parking & Fees: A Tonto Discovery Pass or a daily day-use fee (~$8) is required from April through October.
- Best Time to Visit: Late Spring and Summer for the best swimming, though Spring offers the most impressive water flow.
⚠️ Vital Safety & Pro-Tips
- Flash Flood Warning: This canyon is highly prone to sudden flash floods. Check the forecast before you go; if there is rain anywhere in the area, avoid the canyon entirely.
- Gear Up: Wear sturdy water shoes or hiking boots with excellent grip. The wet granite is extremely slippery.
- Beat the Crowds: As one of Payson’s most popular spots, the parking lot fills up quickly on weekends. Aim for a weekday visit or arrive before 8:00 AM.
- Leave No Trace: This is a high-traffic area. Please pack out all trash and leftovers to help us keep this natural wonder pristine for everyone.
